A short film is often viewed as a stepping stone towards a long form narrative but like a short story or a poem it can be an art form with its own language. This workshop is designed to support you in writing your short film before, during and after the session. Through film screenings, exploration of principles of screenwriting craft and discussion of your work, this workshop will focus on the unique characteristics of the short film, its constraints and its freedoms, structural conventions and departures. By the end of the workshop, you should have a better understanding of what you want to say through film and how you can say it; a better understanding of yourself as a writer, and a better piece of writing.
Because the workshop is not merely theoretical, participants will be given an assignment upon registration that must be submitted by Thursday, June 25, 2015. The assignment will result in a short script in the early stage of development that will be developed in the workshop.
