Analogue Resilience: Film Labs Gathering

April 2023: Registration is now closed.

May 25 – 30, 2023 in Toronto, Canada

Toronto, February 27, 2023—The Liaison of Independent Filmmakers of Toronto (LIFT) is excited to announce that we will be hosting a gathering of analogue film labs and filmmakers here in Toronto, Canada, taking place May 25 – 30, 2023. Our intention for this gathering is to create spaces and situations for artist-run labs, collectives, and filmmakers to share with and learn from each other through collaboration and conversation.

The gathering is centered around the theme Analogue Resilience. Analogue, to invoke the material qualities of the film medium, as well as an embodied way of working. Resilience, in reference to the continued vitality of this form of filmmaking; and to the community of people whom filmmaking survives through, who continue this practice in contexts and locations in which they encounter resistance.

The film labs gathering will involve a variety of programs, including workshops, discussions and demonstration sessions that registered participants can sign up for during the gathering. Sign up for events will be open until they reach capacity, registration for workshops will take place exclusively on-site at LIFT once the gathering has begun.

Film Labs represent a unique way for filmmakers and artists working with celluloid film to have access to the tools of film production in a collectively organized context. At a time when the industry is gradually getting rid of both film and the means to process and print, these labs act as a breeding ground for filmic experimentation beyond any single genre.

The Liaison of Independent Filmmakers of Toronto (LIFT) is Canada’s foremost artist-run production and education organization dedicated to celebrating excellence in the moving image. LIFT exists to provide support and encouragement for independent filmmakers and artists through affordable access to production, post-production and exhibition equipment; professional and creative development; workshops and courses; commissioning and exhibitions; artist residencies; and a variety of other services. LIFT is supported by its membership, Canada Council for the Arts, Ontario Arts Council, Ontario Trillium Foundation, Ontario Arts Foundation, the Government of Ontario and the Toronto Arts Council.
