This course gives an overview of camera theory for the independent filmmaker whether they plan to shoot their own work or they want to learn how to communicate with a Director of Photography and choose the right camera equipment for their project. Through hands-on exercises with analogue film and digital video equipment this workshop will cover the basics of camera operation and camera components, lenses, exposure, f-stops, aperture, light metering, depth of field, aspect ratio and more.

The workshop will include demonstrations with camera, lenses and lights provided by LIFT.

Sue Johnson has been working in film for over a decade, with a focus on cinematography and camera assisting. She has worked on a range of productions including some of the most successful series on television, while also maintaining her own independent media art practice. She is the recent recipient of the Innoversity Summit’s Digital Storytellers Prize, a Canada Council for the Arts Research/Creation grant, and the National Film Board’s Filmmaker Assistance Program grant. She has also been an artist-in-resident through Struts Gallery’s Open Studio program (Sackville, New Brunswick), an educator through organizations such as LIFT, Charles Street Video, Inside Out and Ryerson University, and a juror for the Canadian Screen Awards.

This workshop is part of LIFT’s Touring Filmmaking Workshops with media arts centers throughout Ontario. The touring program is generously supported by the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF).
