The Art of Cinematography

The Art of Cinematography is vital to a film's emotional impact and an essential component to the storytelling process. A skilled cinematographer uses all the tools at their disposal—light, camera, composition, and colour—to shape the visual narrative, making the art of cinematography one of the most influential elements in filmmaking.

Join a panel of professional industry Cinematographers as they share their journeys, dive into the ins and outs of their craft, and navigate the industry as a freelancer or union member.

Moderator:

Michael Jari Davidson is an award-winning Toronto-based cinematographer who chooses to work in the narrative and music video spaces. His cinematography work includes the digital series I WILL BURY YOU, the upcoming feature sci-fi film DEN MOTHER CRIMSON, and Lowell Dean’s post-apocalyptic feature SUPERGRID. Michael’s work has garnered millions of views on YouTube, having lensed music videos for major American record label artists, including the legendary GRAMMY nominated grunge titans Alice In Chains (Capitol), Buck 65 (Warner), and Juno Award winners Tegan and Sara (Warner Bros Records) and Dear Rouge (Universal). Panelists:

Christine Buijs is a director of photography and director based in Toronto.  As a director, she was a recipient of the NSI Drama Prize in 2014, and a finalist for the Cayle Chernin Award in Media Arts in 2015. Her short film DIVORCE PHOTOGRAPHER played at numerous film festivals worldwide before selling to Air Canada and CBC. As a cinematographer, her recent projects include the short films  THE WHISPER OF SUCCULENTS, TREAT DAY, and SUN. Her first feature length doc, TRANSLATING BEAUTY, aired on OutTV/Amazon Prime in 2020.  She recently directed the pilot of a half hour dramedy series set in the 80’s called THE BOUNCE, and three episodes of the comedy PINK IS IN (2023). https://www.christinebuijs.com

Guillaume Cottin is a gaffer / chief lighting technician based in Toronto. Born in Poland, he studied in New York and France before moving to Canada in 2014. Over the past ten years, he has served on dozen of commercials for major brands, TV shows and independent French, Canadian and American feature films. He also works as a camera operator for the CBC on news and documentaries and as a freelance DP. https://guillaumecottin.com​

Morgana McKenzie is a cinematographer currently based in Toronto. Though Morgana works in a range of genres from music video to commercial, she specializes in dark narrative subject matter and vérité documentary. Most recently, her work as a cinematographer received three nominations from the Canadian Society of Cinematographers for her work on Wild (Dramatic Short Cinematography), Lost Time and Black River (Documentary Short for Cinematography). To date, she has lensed stories for HBO Max, CBC Gem, Al Jazeera and The New York Times. Equally interested in showcasing her vision as a director, Morgana’s self-directed and lensed works have garnered over 40 awards from international festivals, including Best Director and the Canada 150 award for Best Film from TIFF Jump Cuts Next Wave. https://morganamckenzie.com

Camera Operator since 2005 and Cinematographer since 2009, Raymond Tuquero's freelance journey has hit many different aspects in the industry from corporate, commercial, live event, documentary and educational projects. Today, as a Cinematographer, Raymond navigates and leads teams through projects such as web series, indie short films, commercials and documentaries. With a student mindset always ready, Raymond takes all of his learnings and also enjoys sharing his experiences and industry knowledge with fellow industry colleagues.
