Optical Printing with the Oxberry 1700

Welcome to the world of the Oxberry 1700 optical printer! This precision instrument was a film industry workhorse not so long ago, when mattes, dissolves, split-screens, etc. were always done the optical way. A step up from the JK printer, the Oxberry is capable of producing an amazing range of optical effects in 16mm or 35mm. This workshop will introduce participants to the Oxberry 1700 step by step, covering the basic functions of the camera and computer controller, as well as techniques for arriving at precise exposures and balanced colour filter packs, fades, dissolves, multiple exposures and step-printing. Whether you’re working in 16mm or 35mm, this machine can do it all, and this workshop will show you how.

Analogue Film experience is required to participate in this workshop. The Introduction to Independent Filmmaking, Camera Theory workshop and/or prior optical printing experience are strongly recommended as a prerequisites. This workshop is recommended as a companion to the Bolex 16mm Cameras, Experimental Animation on 16mm Film, Darkroom Play with 16mm Colour Film, Hand Processing Black and White Film, and Hand Processing Colour Film workshops.

This workshop includes six (6) hours of free practice time to be used before Friday December 13, 2024. Hours must be used during the following LIFT office hours (Monday-Friday, 11am - 5pm).
