Reimagining Independent Filmmaking

NOTE: It is recommended that participants wear a mask for all in-person workshops.

As filmmakers, producers and writers, we scan out across the filmmaking landscape and see an anticipated industrial reliance, a spectacle that fails to reconcile with our positions as artists in an increasingly hostile economy. In this workshop we will critically reassess the production process: from the small iota of an idea percolating, all the way to reckoning with a modern film festival culture. Together we will analyze the current system and use our imaginations to conceive of alternative approaches to completing your film project. Learn how to make a feature film with a $6000 dollar grant from TAC, how to better organize sets to be labour-first, respecting the time of film workers, and ensuring a collective and diverse environment that runs just as efficiently, if not more, than typical production workflows.

As a fiction filmmaker striving to reform contemporary circuitry, seeking to actualize community-economies of film exhibition/distribution and even equipment rentals, Zachary Goldkind will bring his experience of creating, budgeting, and conceptualizing micro-budget feature length films to the fore. Participants will engage in an honest discussion about the industrialism of our film landscape, how we can conceptualize the process of decentralizing those main pillars of industry, what local networks can we create to facilitate a community support system and how do we get out of this silent competition we’re forced into with our friends and peers.

The Introduction to Independent Filmmaking workshop is strongly recommended as a prerequisite. This workshop is recommended as a companion to the Short Film Writing, Advanced Script Studio, Directing Dramatic Film, Visual Metaphor and Expressive Directing Techniques, Introduction to Production Accounting, VFX On Set: Workflow and Supervision Practices and The Business of Film Distribution workshops.
