Past Workshop Descriptions

Advanced Script Studio: 8 Sessions

This workshop is open to those writers who have taken LIFT's Advanced Script Studio and/or Introduction to Screenwriting in the past.

Participants should:
(a)  Have a completed draft of a television pilot or feature film screenplay and be looking to workshop it, up to ten pages at a time, with a supportive group of writers over an eight-week period, either as you undertake a rewrite or in preparation for a rewrite
(b)  Have an outline of a television pilot or feature film screenplay and be committed to writing up to ten new pages every week with the goal of generating a first draft over an eight-week period.

Participants should be committed to attending all sessions. In the event a participant misses a session, they agree to read the missed material submitted by the other writers. This ensures that all participants remain up to speed on the progress of each project.

Participants will present their work each session, usually in the form of script pages (up to 10 pages per week), which will be read/performed aloud in class. After presenting their work, every participant will receive constructive in-class feedback from the group and the instructor. The instructor will use each individual project to illuminate screenwriting concepts and storytelling techniques that will be of use to every writer.

Due to time constraints, we will be unable to workshop more than 90 script pages per writer over the eight-week period. Writers with longer projects are welcome to participate but should understand that they will only be able to workshop a portion of their material. Each participant’s contribution (participating in readings, sharing constructive feedback, etc.) is crucial to the overall success of this workshop class. Therefore, please ensure that the dates of each session are compatible with your schedule before registering.
This is not an introductory class. Participants must have taken LIFT’s Advanced Script Studio and/or Introduction to Screenwriting and meet the (a) or (b) criterias above. This class encourages imagination, creativity and originality. This workshop is based on conventional narrative (fiction) filmmaking and storytelling practices and is therefore not suited to projects that aspire to be non-narrative or avant-garde.

Prior to the class, please create a profile on Zoom and download the free version of the application. You will receive an email from LIFT with an invitation link to join the workshop one hour before the class begins which will prompt you to open the application or web browser. Please ensure that you log in using a Zoom account with a profile name that appears as the same name registered for the class. If not, for security reasons, you may not be permitted to join. During the workshop, we advise that you keep your microphone on mute to minimize external noise and that you unmute when participating in class discussions. Please also arrive to the session on time for attendance and class participation. ONLINE workshops may be recorded for staff and facilitator assessment. Recorded material will not be made available to participants. Review all workshop policies before registering.
