For the International Year of Youth, the Canadian Commission for UNESCO
and the Canada Council for the Arts launched a video project for young
Canadians based on the 2010 International Year of Youth theme, “Dialogue and
Mutual Understanding.”

Young Canadian members of the Canadian Commission for UNESCO Youth
Advisory Group (YAG) were challenged to produce short videos no more than three
minutes long. Young people from seven Canadian cities worked in small groups
under the supervision of a mentor associated with an artist run centre in each
of the cities to produce one video from each region. The project fits closely
with LIFT’s mandate to provide access to media art production and training to a
broad community.

See What I Think?
LIFT was successful in hosting the Ontario component of the Do You
See What I Think? project. LIFT managed the production of a video by YAG
team Chris Royal and Ronan MacParland. LIFT provided equipment, technical services,
production, and post facilities for their video.
Project mentor
Zoe Gordon is an experienced multi-media artist, educator, sound
designer and new mother. As an educator, she has taught over thirty intensive
workshops to youth and adults leading students through the filmmaking process from
start to finish. Zoe has taught at many Canadian film training
institutions including Cineworks, Arts Umbrella Vancouver, the Gulf Island Film
and Television School and Simon Fraser University. At the GIFTS she has taught
dozens of weeklong intensive courses for youth and adults in Super8, 16mm and
digital video. Zoe has worked with LIFT as an instructor and mentor for
UForChange and the It’s On project. Based on her knowledge of the film
discipline and enthusiasm for youth education Zoe was a perfect fit as the lead
mentor for the UNESCO YAG project.
The videos produced for this project will get media coverage and wide
distribution in 2011-2012, especially at the Edmonton Youth Forum organized by
the John Humphrey Centre for Peace and Human Rights, the Canadian Commission
for UNESCO annual general and the Paris Youth Forum in the fall of 2011.
