Call for Participants for Indigenous Routes: Natives Online
Online and Mobile Development Commission
The Indigenous Routes Collective is currently looking for two Ontario-based indigenous artists for a commission to produce new web or mobile-based applications, games, and/or sites reflecting native culture. This project is open to all indigenous* artists resident in Ontario, with priority given to individuals outside major urban centres.
This project will commission two new projects for web and mobile dissemination. These will fall into simple video games or basic interactive projects. Due to server constraints all projects can involve only text, photo, geolocation and some audio. The possibilities extend from local works exploring geolocation to video games exploring native realities. We are primarily interested in proposals that reflect contemporary native culture in your community. This is an open call and every support in the project will follow the accepted projects.
Training will be provided on programming for web, game and mobile development in Toronto. Attendance at this training site (September 2013) is mandatory. All travel, accommodation and per diems will be paid. There will be an additional artist fee of $2,000 for the completion of the project and public release. All projects will be copyright of the artist within a contract with Indigenous Routes.
Our belief is that through developing web and mobile development skills we can create a network of Indigenous artists with programming skills to develop our own digital economy and reflect our people to non-indigenous perspectives.
All participants will have deliverables expected every two-weeks, including regular skype meetings with mentors. Final delivery for all projects will be required for January 2014.
Eligibility Requirements:
– To be eligible, an Ontario resident Indigenous person (i.e. self-identified as Indigenous, Aboriginal or First Peoples and their descendents)*
– Have a basic understanding and passion to learn media arts
– Must be able to commit a two week training period in Toronto (September 16-25, 2013) and project delivery by January 1, 2014
Applicants must submit:
– Contact Information (Name, telephone and e-mail)
– Short biography (one paragraph) including your Indigenous affiliation and a CV (maximum three pages)
– A one to three page letter detailing why you would want to be involved, your interest and/or experience in media, and the issues and ideas you would like to explore in the project
– Documentation of any past works (photo, video, painting, sculpture, craft, audio or text)
Submission Instructions:
The EXTENDED deadline for applications is Monday, August 12, 2013 at 5:00pm.

*Indigenous communities, First Peoples, and Aboriginal nations are those that are self-identified as having a historical continuity with societies that developed on recognized territories before colonization or transformation of that region into a nation-state and may consider themselves distinct (with often unique cultural, linguistic, traditional, social and other characteristics) from other sectors of the societies or nation-states now prevailing on those territories.
