Phytograms

NOTE: This workshop is in person and require participants to wear a mask in order to attend.

Phytograms are created by the exposure of black and white film overlaid with plant material and dried in direct sunlight. In this hands-on class we will explore phytogramming, an experimental cameraless animation technique, where plant life is both the subject matter of the image and assists the means of photographic reproduction. Participants will have an opportunity to review the technique and soak plants in organic developer made with the plants, water, washing soda and vitamin-c, create 16mm film outside and project it once it dries.

We will create individual and collaborative pieces on film and on photo paper. 

Our films will be scanned and available to download approximately 1-month after the workshop.

No experience is necessary. Please bring any recently picked leaves, flowers, stems and grasses etc...you want to work with. This workshop includes all film, chemistry, and supplies for use during the workshop. A scanned version of the film we make together will be available after the workshop.

Instructor: Francisca Duran

Francisca Duran is a Chilean-Canadian experimental media artist who creates films, video installation, and 2D, photo-based, mixed-media works about history, memory and violence. Duran has exhibited internationally at film festivals and venues including Edinburgh International Film Festival, International Film Festival at Rotterdam, HotDocs, Arkipel, Anthology Film Archives, Los Angeles Film Forum, John Hansard Gallery and VideoPool. Duran holds an M.F.A. from York University and a B.A.H. from Queen’s University and continues to learn at artist-run centres and through mentorships with artists. Her practice has been supported by research, travel, and production grants from Canadian arts councils.
