Experimental Animation on 16mm Film

NOTE: It is recommended that participants wear a mask for all in-person workshops.

Join us to explore the traditional art of direct animation techniques with scratching, mark-making and inking on 16mm film; stop-motion techniques with Bolexes; as well as the use of LIFT's very own Oxberry 16mm animation stand. In this two-session workshop, learn the basic principles of animation and experiment with these different analogue animation techniques, create abstract images on film to discover what works best for your creative project.

This workshop includes all film, darkroom chemistry, and supplies for use during the workshop. LIFT’s Camera Theory workshop is a prerequisite for the Super 8mm Filmmaking Intensive. This workshop is recommended as a companion to the Experimenting with Super 8, Bolex, Arri SRII 16mm and Aaton XTR Prod Super 16mm Cameras, Darkroom Play with 16mm Colour Film, Hand Processing Black and White Film and Hand Processing Colour Film workshops.
