Composing for Film

Music is one of the most powerful storytelling tools in film, guiding emotion, shaping rhythm, and deepening audience connection. This one-evening workshop introduces participants to the fundamentals of film scoring, from spotting a scene and developing themes to composing with mood, instrumentation, and timing in mind. Through guided examples, participants will explore how to write music that enhances narrative and elevates visual storytelling. This comprehensive workshop not only covers composing music for film, but expands on collaborating with directors and editors, and basic practical techniques to start scoring your own projects.

This workshop is for emerging composers interested in film scoring, filmmakers seeking to understand music’s role in storytelling and musicians exploring how to transition into composing for screen.

Instructor: Sean Croley

Vocalist and keyboard player, Sean Croley is a veteran singer, songwriter, and producer of music for television and film but also an artist under various pseudonyms for production music library requirements. With 30+ years as a recording/mix engineer, Sean brings a level of mix detail to his compositions that allow the listener to 'feel' the music. His music can be heard on History channel, Discovery, WeTV, Magnolia TV, SKY Sports, HULU, Shudder, Amazon Prime, streaming platforms and networks throughout Europe. When composing for film, not only do you get an innovative composer but also the rare find of a skilled mix engineer which is a key skill when delivering projects directly to the client or to the dub stage. As a producer/ mixer, Sean's primary focus is really understanding the acoustic vision of the artist; to take what they bring and work alongside them to develop their project into a work they had never considered or imagined it could be. A graduate of Fanshawe College in London Ontario studying recording engineering and music production, Sean is now based near Hamilton Ontario Canada. www.seancroley.studio
