Script Supervision

The Script Supervisor is the representative of the Editor on set, and primarily supports the Director to ensure that everything that is filmed will be able to be cut together to make the movie, TV show or commercial as scripted. This includes making sure actors are saying their lines correctly and supporting the maintenance of all forms of Continuity; including costume, hair and makeup, props and set dressing. Furthermore, the Script Supervisor monitors and documents the coverage of a scene, ensuring that all the necessary angles are captured, that each angle responds to editorial principals such as intended eye-line, axis and screen-direction, and that all of the media is indexed via the Slate Number and annotated in daily reports including the Top Sheet, Shot Log, Lined Script and Facing Pages.

In preparation to shoot, the script supervisor creates a Master Continuity Breakdown, which identifies Script Days, Page Eighths and Estimated Run Times, among other metrics, which are tracked in the daily reports during production. At the end of the day, the script supervisor’s goal is for the Editor to be working with clearly labelled and annotated footage which all cuts together like butter.

This class seeks to introduce the basic knowledge and skills of the craft, and is intended to prepare the student to script supervise a short film.

The Introduction to Independent Filmmaking workshop is recommended as a prerequisite. This workshop is recommended as a companion to the Directing Dramatic Film and Introduction to Production Accounting workshops.
