Eco-Processing 16mm Film

NOTE: This workshop is in person. It is recommended that participants wear a mask while on the premises.

In this hands-on workshop participants will learn how to develop 16mm black and white film using organic products such as flowers, coffee, and bee pollen. Students will have the opportunity to shoot their own footage, create home-made organic developers and hand-process their film in Lomo Tanks. Participants will also learn the history of eco-processing and the basics of the photochemical process, as well as be introduced to other artists that incorporates it into their practice. At the end of the workshop students will have hands-on experience and the knowledge to embark on their own eco-processing adventures.

The Camera Theory workshop is strongly recommended as a prerequisite. This course is recommended as a companion to the Arri SRII 16mm and Aaton XTR Prod Super 16mm Cameras, Bolex 16mm Cameras, Super 8 Filmmaking Intensive (Shooting and Processing), Introduction to Regular/Double 8mm Filmmaking, Hand Processing Black and White Film and Hand Processing Colour Film workshops. This workshop includes all film, darkroom chemistry and supplies.

Robin Riad is an Egyptian-Canadian experimental filmmaker. Robin works primarily with analogue mediums, and likes to find new ways to mess with film. She devotes her time to the Canadian Filmmakers Distribution Centre (CFMDC), the8fest, and teaching many workshops throughout the year. As one LIFT’s technicians, she supports many artists and independent filmmakers with their arts practice, and enjoys hearing about all their fun, exciting projects.
