Digital Colour Grading with DaVinci Resolve

NOTE: This workshop is in person and require participants to wear a mask in order to attend.

With digital cinematography, digital colour grading has become an integral part of the post-production pipeline. Software like DaVinci Resolve has leveraged the power of more efficient computer systems with decades of colour timing experience. Explore modern digital colour grading tools, apply fundamental concepts and treatments through hands-on lessons from initial conform, raw colour grading, to HSL keying. Participants will have a brief look at Blackmagic Cinema Camera 2.5K RAW, Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro 4.6K RAW and RED 5K RAW workflows, and learn the full extent of raw information available from each camera to take their visuals to the next level with DaVinci Resolve.

Participants are encouraged to bring their own source material, which may be used in the workshop.

Instructor: Marisa Hoicka

Marisa Hoicka is a film colourist with a background as a narrative video artist and painter. Hoicka has coloured advertisements, fiction, documentary and experimental films, web series and music videos. She has taught colour correction at Trinity Square Video, Toronto Public Libraries and for York University’s filmed Tech-Know courses.

Hoicka’s This is Not a Test was shown on all Air Canada flights as part of the Images Festival’s Stitches in Time. Rendered from textiles of varying textures, the homemade colour bars in this video literally materialize the familiar SMPTE test pattern used to adjust and calibrate NTSC video monitors. Her videos have also been shown in Berlin’s Galerie Kurt Im Hirsch, San Francisco’s MoMA, Oakville Galleries, Vidéographe, Trinity Square Video and across Canada. Hoicka has a Master in Digital Media (Ryerson) and a Studio Art BFA (Concordia).
