Welcome to New Summer 2014 Technical Assistant Alex Jokinen

The LIFT staff and board would like to welcome our new Summer 2014 Technical Assistant Alex Jokinen who started on June 9, 2014. Over the next several weeks, she will be working with the newly acquired Jacques Madvo collection. The acquisition, donated by the Madvo estate, consists of the filmmaker’s life’s work, captured on 16mm, including the long-running TVO documentary series titled Countries and People (1980 – 1994). Alex’s job will be to assess and catalogue all items in the collection, resulting in one organized, comprehensive archive. With this special project, we hope not only to preserve Madvo’s films, but also facilitate access to material for filmmakers who wish to work creatively with this footage in their own work.

“I am passionate about film and the conservation of our moving image heritage, so having the opportunity to handle the Madvo collection is super exciting for me. I also think the possibility of using these films as found footage gives this project an added dimension that is really unique and that I’m thrilled to be a part of. There is such a wealth of material here—I’m eager to discover what, exactly, we have our hands on.”

Alex Jokinen is currently working toward a masters degree in Film Preservation and Collections Management at Ryerson University. Her interest in film, particularly experimental filmmaking, stems from earlier studies in Art History at the University of Guelph, where she focused on Modern and Avant-garde cinema. Since then, she has had the chance to engage with different film communities in Canada and abroad, having lived in Edmonton, Quebec City and Paris before settling in Toronto. In the future, she aims to pursue a career as a moving image archivist.
