Best Wishes to Technical Coordinator Karl Reinsalu

LIFT sends our best wishes to outgoing Technical Coordinator Karl Reinsalu, who is moving on to other opportunities. For the past eighteen years, Karl has been a significant member of the team, from contributing to our move to 1137 Dupont Street fifteen years ago to supporting the day to day technical needs of our members. An ardent advocate for analogue filmmaking, he has long supported LIFT’s mandate to keep film alive, while also making sure to keep all our digital gear up to date. His commitment to analogue film made him both an active participant in the 2016 Film Lab Gathering in Nantes and our own 2023 Film Lab Gathering, “Analogue Resilience.” His on-set experience, knowledge of lighting and cinematography, and his willingness to take time to troubleshoot, made him a helpful resource to many members as they strategized about the production needs of their upcoming projects. He liked to describe LIFT as a “sandbox” and that sense of play spoke to his enthusiasm towards the many different projects that came through LIFT. We wish Karl success in his future endeavours.

Based in Toronto, Karl Reinsalu is a “do-it-yourselfer” with expertise in analogue film techniques and an honours diploma from the Film and Television Program at Humber College. Since 2006, Karl has honed his craft through experimentation with various camera techniques including camera modifications and innovating creative solutions to accomplish cinematic feats blending both analogue and digital workflows. In his former role as Technical Coordinator for the Liaison of Independent Filmmakers of Toronto (LIFT), Karl supported hundreds of productions and fellow film artists realize their vision. In his personal time Karl is found caring for the life in his garden, actively working on projects in his workshop, cooking up a storm for his loved ones, or simply enjoying time in natural environments.
