In this workshop, participants will be exposed to two methods of 16mm direct animation utilizing print-based methods. Participants will learn how to laser-print directly onto clear celluloid, as well as how to lift images from print sources onto film using transparent tape and water. We will also go over basics regarding 16mm projector mechanics, splice-editing, and working with film loops.
S.F. is a visual artist (Libra) from YWG, whose film and video work has screened at underground festivals and marginalized venues worldwide. He studied film theory and production at the University of Manitoba, and began conducting lo-fi moving image experiments in 2010. Primarily a filmmaker, also invested in photography, re-photography, kaleidoscope and collage. In addition to producing his own work, S.F. presents the work of others through the Winnipeg Underground Film Festival and Open City Cinema.
Aaron Zeghers is a Winnipeg-based artist working in film, video and photography. He is often found working with analog mediums, found footage, lo-fi technology, experimental processes and expanded cinema. Zeghers is a founder of the Open City Cinema collective and the Winnipeg Underground Film Festival and the current artistic director of the Gimli Film Festival. Zeghers’ films have played at festivals and venues around the world.
This workshop is part of LIFT’s Touring Filmmaking Workshops with media arts centers throughout Ontario. The touring program is generously supported by the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF).
