Programme:
Total running time of 100 Minutes
Prologue:
Frame Manoeuvres, 2021, 3 mins, Super 8mm loop, 18fps, silent
Shown as an intermediary stage of a upcoming project that investigates the port pilotage area (where only the port pilot is sufficiently skilled at manoeuvring) and the film frame taken both as demarcated surfaces devoted to manoeuvring, to precise procedures.
Locations, 2019, 7 mins, Super 8mm loop, 18fps, magnetic sound
The first half consists in an unprocessed old super8 Kodachrome cartridge which is magnetic sound-striped. A voice (Polina Akhmetzyanova) reads an abstract description of what is seen in the second part. The second half consists in a fresh super8 cartridge which is silent and exposed to light.
Sugerencia de presentación, 2021, 15 mins, spatial proposal (folding stand, two projectors, magnetic sound, chairs, rewinding arms, portable speakers)
A projection in its original form. The conventions of cinema exhibition are disarticulated –the audience is presented with the very elements of cinema, disassembled. The projectionist and the cinema attendant in the spotlight. Projection in projection sauce.
A:
Un baile con Fred Abstrait, 2020, 26min, Super 8mm, 18fps, silent
Una película en color, 2019, 28 mins, Super 8mm, 18fps, silent
“My room (…) lies east and west, and, if you keep very close to the wall, forms a parallelogram of thirty-six steps round. My journey will, however, be longer than this; for I shall traverse my room up and down and across, without rule or plan. I shall even zig-zag about, following, if needs be, every possible geometrical line. I am no admirer of people who are such masters of their every step and every idea that they can say ‘To-morrow I shall make three calls, write four letters, and finish this or that work’ ”.
(Xavier de Maistre, ‘A Journey Round my Room’, p. 2)
Entirely shot within the limits of a room, it explores the relationship between the room and the camera, conceived as another enclosed space where a light-based event takes place. Between the camera and the walls, between the lenses and the window, the furniture and the room, a rock and a hard place. In line with the in-room process, the work brings into play the in-camera editing technique that the super8 format allows, as all the other pieces in the programme. Among other possibilities, ‘Un baile con Fred Abstrait’ (the first half) could be seen as an abstract room parody of a Fred Astaire’s musical comedy and ‘Una película en color’ (second half) as a colour palette taken as a method. “I hope that I have made a film, a method. Blue is also a method. (…) Cinema? Yes, it’s a method. Red is also a method”.
(Marcel Broodthaers, ‘Cinéma’, p.66)
Intermission
Intermission, 2021, 5 mins, Super 8mm, 18fps, silent
B:
KINO~OKNO #24, 2021, 3 mins, Super 8mm, 18fps, silent
The Gabinete kino~okno’s Ektachrome collective series addresses window spaces and actions that try to link the window to the film matter. #24 depicts a window at house by the coast. A couple inhabits the window space from midday to twilight.
Work to get done, 2021, 24 mins, Super 8mm, 18fps, magnetic sound
In their own way, the super8 reels that comprises the film are records of places while they are being made: a number of street construction sites, some artist studios and other house spaces in which a process and a state of incompleteness takes place. In line with all these matters, the film is shown under construction and the magnetic soundtrack is recorded on-site just during the test run before the screening making use of whatever is found in the space, at Madi’s in this case.
Bruno Delgado Ramo’s films are stunning examples of the possibilities of Super 8mm filmmaking. Intimate, exacting and complex, his films investigate colour, space and architecture in rigorously planned reveries that allow the vibrancy of his discoveries to captivate his audience. His Una película en color debuted at the Rotterdam Film Festival to rave reviews just before the pandemic (critic Jordan Cronk called it, “the unequivocal discovery of this year”) and this is an extremely rare chance to see a selection of Delgado Ramo’s films projected on Super 8mm with the artist present.
