A short film is often viewed as a stepping-stone towards a long form narrative but like a short story or a poem it can be an art form with its own language. Through film screenings, lecture and group discussion, this workshop will focus on the unique characteristics of the short film, its constraints and its freedoms, structural conventions and departures. Participants will learn story editing and workshop each other’s work with the mentorship of an industry professional.
Participants must submit a brief description (2 paragraph maximum) of their short script and come to the session with a short script in some written stage of development. Please submit the brief description by Friday, October 16, 2015 to specialprojects(at)lift.on.ca with “LIFT/ DocFest: Short Film Writing” in the subject line.
Since graduating from York University’s Department of Film in 2003, Matthew Miller has established himself as one of Canada’s rising filmmakers. His films have screened and won top prizes at international festivals including the Toronto International Film Festival, Slamdance, Locarno and Busan. In 2013, he produced The Dirties directed by Matt Johnson, which won the Grand Jury prize at Slamdance before being distributed by filmmaker Kevin Smith and selected as one of three finalists for the coveted Rogers Best Canadian Film prize. He is currently in post-production on Operation Avalanche (also produced for Johnson), which was picked up for North American distribution by Lionsgate. He is in pre-production on Feline, a horror-thriller that he wrote with Sascha Drews. Miller is also in the process of adapting the International bestseller A Father’s Affair written by Karel Van Loom and currently teaches screenwriting at the Toronto Film School.
This workshop is part of LIFT’s Touring Filmmaking Workshops with media arts centers throughout Ontario. The touring program is generously supported by the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF).
