LIFT ANNOUNCES THE 2019 BAICC RESIDENT
AITZIBER OLASKOAGA
TORONTO, January 21, 2019—The Liaison of Independent Filmmakers of Toronto (LIFT) is pleased to welcome Basque-Spanish filmmaker Aitziber Olaskoaga as the current resident in the second edition of the BAICC Residencias Artísticas Internacionales de Creacion Cinematográfica, a collaboration between the (S8) Mostra Internacional de Cinema Periférico, LIFT and Acción Cultural Española (AC/E). The residency supports the making of a new analogue film-based work by creators born or living in Spain. The work made in the residency will premiere at the next iteration of the S8 Film Festival, held during the first week of June 2019 in A Coruña, Spain. Olaskoaga is one half of PRISMÁTICAS, a collective with Pilar Monsell. Olaskoaga will be in Toronto until February 8 to work on their collaborative prototype, the SEE-W-ING MACHINE, a device that combines a 16mm film projector and a sewing machine, that will allow them to sew and project films at the same time.
As a collective, PRISMÁTICAS are passionately committed to the use and manipulation of analog cinema, who explore the potentiality of the collective and open source process by weaving encounters among working women from different industries, especially audiovisual and textile industries. Their SEE-W-ING MACHINE will allow them to take these ideas into the performative environment, revealing the often invisible labour of women’s work.
Aitziber Olaskoaga, Bilbao (1980). Visual artist that works with video as well as analog formats to carry documentary film projects. She’s currently studying the Film and Video Master Program at California Institute of the Arts thanks to a fellowship from the university, where she works as the lead projectionist. In 2018, she was part of the exhibition Bi dos two, curated by eremuak at Azkuna Zentroa, Bilbao (Spain) and she’s currently editing a video essay that reflects on nationalism and the construction of national identity in the Basque Country together with Pilar Monsell, thanks to a grant of the Basque Government. Aitziber is taking a year off from school to realize a few projects in Europe, like an art residency at BilbaoArte, where she is now working on Dar Salam, a collective project of the greater metropolitan area of Bilbao.
Pilar Monsell, Córdoba (1979). Filmmaker, editor and artist working with documentaries and film essays since 2008, year in which she premiered her first short Distancias (Distances) and was awarded the Audience Award in the 49th Populi Documentary Film Festival. She is also the co-founder of Laboratorio Reversible, a collective film lab dedicated to analog cinema creation and experimentation. Pilar founded her own production company, Proxémica, and produced her first feature film África 815, in 2014, which has won many awards. Currently, Pilar is part of Contravisiones (Countervisions), a collective born in 2017 at La Virreina that researches the performativity of images.
(S8) Mostra de Cinema Periférico
The (S8) is an event held in A Coruña, Spain, the first week of June. (S8) brings to the city an international film festival with a unique concept in our country that has as a reference essential world events such as Rotterdam, Oberhausen, Ann Arbor, Media City, Images Festival (Toronto), 25 FPS (Zagreb), Viennale, Courtisane or Vila do Conde, and places A Coruña on the map of filmmaking. www.s8cinema.com
