Cecilia Araneda – 2017 Roberto Ariganello National Residency

LIFT ANNOUNCES THE INAUGURAL WINNER OF THE ROBERTO ARIGANELLO AWARD
CECILIA ARANEDA

Toronto, July 7, 2017—The Liaison of Independent Filmmakers of Toronto (LIFT) is pleased to announce that Winnipeg filmmaker Cecilia Araneda has been selected as the inaugural recipient of the Roberto Ariganello Award. The awards honours the legacy of Roberto Ariganello, the late LIFT Executive Director who did much to encourage artists to make films, and comes in the form of month long production residency for the recipient to make a film. Araneda has joined us this summer to work on her current work in progress, utilizing many of LIFT’s resources towards this process-based film.

Cecilia Araneda was born in Chile and came to Canada at a young age as a refugee with her family after they escaped Chile’s coup d’état. She grew up in northern Manitoba and currently lives in Winnipeg. Araneda holds a BFA (hons) in Theatre (playwriting) from York University and an MFA in Creative Writing (screenplay writing) from the University of British Columbia, where she studied under thesis advisor Hart Hanson. She is additionally a three-time alumna of the fabled Film Farm. She has completed 14 short films and videos as director and writer, which have won awards and screened in festivals, curated programs and art house cinemas internationally. www.ceciliaaraneda.ca

Araneda served as Executive Director of the Winnipeg Film Group from 2006 to 2017. Through her work in this organization, she has fostered the development of many Winnipeg-based filmmakers who have gone on to garner national and international attention. In 2011, she was recognized by the Government of Manitoba for her work as a woman artist working for social change.

Araneda will present a program of her work on July 25, 2017 at PIX Film Gallery.
