Schroedinger’s artist practice engages with the politics of the moving image by examining the inherited ideologies of media and by modeling how we can unearth and interfere with these ideologies in different ways.

“Colours colonise things. They conquer them and discover them, like a paint bucket, that someone pours out over something. The colours colonise things, because they inhabit without asking for permission, and initially refuse to commit to an equal relationship. As Technicolorlando the figure changes her colour space and enters another time. In the new time, things are no longer modeled after the colours of nature and colour is free from the places intended for it.” The videowork shows colour as autonomous actress within the rules and boundaries of filmic space.

Rainbow’s Gravity (2014) is a cinematic study on the Agfacolor-Neu colour film stock made in Nazi Germany. Along its three layers of emulsion, the film digs deep into the escapist colourised landscape of this time and asks for the material requirements, retentions and ideological continuities of the Agfacolor palette. Film sequences, projected in the former production line, dismantle not only themselves, but also our view accustomed to historicise, aiming to visualise what the colour does not show. The film tries to realise not only how it had been—in the darkrooms of the Agfa film factory—but also how it can be possible at all to face this reality today within film, in images and movements without a final or even conciliatory view of the past.
Kerstin Schroedinger is a filmmaker and musician based in London and Zurich. In her work she seeks to critically interrogate image production and to produce and reproduce images as material of thought. She works with video, sound and text with a historiographical practice, questioning the means of production, historical continuities and ideological certainties of representation. Her practice is collaborative, recent works have been Prendre la Parole at FMAC Mediatheque Geneve with Andrea Thal, Maria Iorio and Raphael Cuomo (curatorial project, 2014), Rainbow’s Gravity (Video, 2014), Red, she said (Video, 2011) both with Mareike Bernien, Times together (exhibition, 2013) at VBKO Vienna with Mareike Bernien, Moira Hille, Julia Wieger.
