Introduction to Regular/Double 8mm Filmmaking

Regular/Double 8mm is related to but different than both 16mm and super 8. Try it out: shoot/process/project this unique-format film in a day. Black and white film will be shot on small, sweet Bolex cameras. We'll process the film in the darkroom, playing with its curious two halves. Thirdly, we'll use both a 16mm and a Regular 8mm projector to screen the film, learning how projection choice affects the effect of the movie. Have an experience of analogue motion pictures that can only come via this least common of formats. Do you love it? Only one way to find out.

Regular 8mm Filmmaking Intensive Workshop includes:
Regular/Double8mm Camera instruction
Shooting black and white film
Darkroom hand-processing (using modern DIY “eco” chemistry)
Projecting film

All equipment, film and chemistry will be provided for this workshop. There is an opportunity to receive a digital copy of the film that was shot and processed following the workshop (must be communicated to LIFT on registration via email at workshops@lift.ca). LIFT’s Camera Theory workshop is a prerequisite for the Regular 8mm Filmmaking workshop.

Instructor: Sandy McLennan

Sandy McLennan loves wandering just outside his darkroom door with cameras and sound recorders. Hand-processing and printing motion pictures via chemistry and chance reveals memory of personal and state-of-the-world emotions. Specializing in Double 8mm and 16mm print film, he often includes audio improvised from location field recordings, self-talk and the physical sound of assembling. He leads workshops giving the experience of slow-hand time and revelation. He has received production and travel grants from Canada Council and Ontario Arts Council.
