LIFT ANNOUNCES SPRING 2016 ARTIST IN RESIDENCE

Toronto, April 19, 2016—The Liaison of Independent Filmmakers of Toronto (LIFT) is pleased to announce that Icelandic film and performance artist Rebecca Moran has joined us in Toronto as an artist in residence from April 1 to May 16, 2016 to create a new analogue film project installation using the full range of facilities that LIFT has on offer. She will be presenting an artist talk on Tuesday, April 26, 2016 at LIFT (1137 Dupont Street) and teaching a workshop on contact printing 16mm film on Sunday, May 1, 2016.

Moran’s process can be seen as both embracing traditional filmmaking processes and as a radical break from expectations of what a film can be. Her installation and performance work invokes a liberal pastiche of media art, but often the analogue material of film is returned to as both reference and inspiration. As she writes, “her work explores the loopholes between things, the clash. The conflict. The paradox. Where opposites meet and create coherency. She is fascinated by films physical representation of time and as a material how it relates to other processes such as painting, printmaking and performance.” Her work blends the contemporary with the traditional and LIFT is a perfect place for this theoretical exploration that merges the possibilities of current and older technology.
 

At LIFT, she will use the darkroom and optical printer to create a series of projected paintings. “Over time subtle sections begin to shift or the colors separate out, a movement of the wrist, a wisp of hair…playing with the stillness of a single frame of time.” She has been collecting images of paintings both from pop culture and art history that invoke a scene that is reflective of a film still or a frozen glimpse in time. She intends to recreate some of these images in tableau vivant, producing the link between a moving .gif and a film loop. She is interested in destroying the preciousness of the film and at the same time elevating the mundane references of our modern life to a form normally reserved for higher arts and cinema. 

On Tuesday April 26 at 7:00pm at LIFT (1137 Dupont Street), Moran will present an artist talk of her work and introduce her practice. She will discuss the small format film cooperative, Kinsomiðja, she started in 2009 in Reykjavik Iceland as a means to introduce 16mm programming and workshops to the local art scene—yet another point on the map of film micro-labs that have emerged around the world in the last decade. Since Kinsomiðja is a member of the film-lab circuit, Moran has been able to travel and connect with like-minded organizations around the world. In addition, she is highly engaged in net-art processes and seeing her work in that context will build on the type of digital and analogue synthesis that is so important for LIFT at the moment—analogue recast via a contemporary aesthetic that resonates with the current media arts scene. Excerpts of her installation work will be on display.

On May 1, Moran will lead a workshop, 16mm Printing with Light, that will teach participants about the possibilities of non-traditional contact printing A key tool in Moran’s process, contact printing involves the duplication of one strand of film to another through actual physical contact and exposure to light. Participants will learn about color separations, and spot color printing using a flatbed editor as a contact printer. Taken from techniques of offset printing, all images will be created on hi-contrast black and white film and collage printed onto a final strip of color film, for a spectrum of non-wordly colors and patterns. Rebecca Moran is a visual artist based in Reykjavík, Iceland. She works in diverse forms such as installation and sculpture, which often examines concepts and techniques of 16mm filmmaking to explore perception, narrative and linear thinking; where time loses the marker of meaning.
