LIFT announces the inaugural BAICC Resident – Tono Mejuto

LIFT ANNOUNCES THE INAUGURAL BAICC RESIDENT
TONO MEJUTO

TORONTO, February 13, 2018—The Liaison of Independent Filmmakers of Toronto (LIFT) is pleased to welcome Spanish filmmaker Tono Mejuto as the inaugural resident of the BAICC Residencias Artísticas Internacionales de Creacion Cinematográfica, a collaboration between the (S8) Mostra Internacional de Cinema Periférico, LIFT and Acción Cultural Española (AC/E). The residency supports the making of a new analogue film-based work by creators born or living in Spain. The work made in the residency will premiere at the next iteration of the S8 Film Festival, which runs from May 31 to June 4, 2018 in A Coruña, Spain. Mejuto joins us from February 5 through the end of March in order to develop his film performance Reliefs.

Mejuto’s film performance is about the city and its ‘reliefs,’ using a 16mm stereoscopic camera set-up to film the urban environment and projecting the results back on a dual projector stereoscopic system. The use of dual projection on celluloid radically transforms the 3D image from what we are accustomed to, giving us a more ‘rugged’ perception of these three dimensions. The inevitable temporary asynchrony generated between both eyes reinforces the limits of our perceptions. The jurors who selected Mejuto’s project for this residency commented that it “shows a unique ability to analyze something that has become a part of our time (3D movies) and consider it from an artistic point of view.” Mejuto’s project will draw a large part on the resources and expertise that LIFT makes available to creators.

Tono Mejuto (A Coruña, 1983) is a filmmaker, photographer and architect. In 2017, he directed his first piece in 16mm, Qviasma (2017). He has programmed for festivals such as Play-doc, Filmadrid and Curtocircuito (Spain), FIVC (Chile), Dança en Foco de Sao Paulo (Brazil), at the Teatro-Circo de Braga (Portugal) and the Ceprodac (Mexico).
