In celebration of three decades of filmmaking, the Liaison of Independent Filmmakers of Toronto (LIFT) has commissioned thirty Canadian film veterans and emerging voices to make new works originating on or in the spirit of Super 8mm film. Without thematic guidance other than the small-format film gauge, these artists have produced everything from lively animations to sparse landscape studies and diaristic narratives. With this project, we not only celebrate LIFT, but film itself: since the end of film has been pronounced in favour of digital technology, there is beauty in the slow materiality of thousands of tiny pictures etched in silver.
List of filmmakers:
Nobu Adilman, Marcos Arriaga, Christina Battle, Scott Miller Berry, Ulysses Castellanos, John Creson, Alison Duke, Francisca Duran, R. Bruce Elder, Larissa Fan, Tess Girard, Mike Hoolboom, Ant Horasanli, Jean-Paul Kelly, Chris Kennedy, Heather Keung, Alexandre Larose, Jorge Lozano, Julieta María, Prashant Miranda, Midi Onodera, Susan Oxtoby, Madi Piller, John Porter, John Price, Adam Rosen, Raha Shirazi, Kika Thorne, Greg Woodburry, and Alan Zweig
The materials may have changed in thirty years, but the clarity of vision and expressive desire has remained. Some filmmakers will be present, as will LIFT executive director Ben Donoghue. LIFT is Canada’s foremost artist-run production and education organization dedicated to celebrating excellence in the moving image.
