The Bolex provides a great introduction to shooting on film, offering simplicity for beginner filmmakers and more advanced features for the experienced camera user. Gain a solid foundation in the operation of this versatile camera in this hands-on workshop.
After learning the basics of the Bolex, participants will film with 100 feet of Kodak 3378 black and white stock (provided). After shooting, the participants will have the opportunity to process their footage by hand in the darkroom and see the results.
This workshop is open to H.B. Beal Secondary School students.
Eva Kolcze is a Toronto-based artist, filmmaker and educator who creates films and installations based around themes of landscape, architecture and the body. Her work has screened at venues and festivals including the National Gallery of Canada, Anthology Film Archives, the Gardiner Museum, Cinémathèque québécoise, Birch Contemporary, International Rotterdam Film Festival, Oberhausen Film Festival and the Images Festival. She’s also instructed youth and adult filmmaking workshops at the Toronto International Film Festival, York University, Harbourfront Centre, Liaison of Independent Filmmakers of Toronto and Artscape Gibraltar Point. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Art from OCAD University and a Master of Fine Art from York University.
Daniel McIntyre is an artist working primarily with film to create work about memory, identity and history. Through experimentation with hand processing and curation, his art practice is rooted in physical manipulation of materials to alter image creation. Currently completing an MFA at York University, he has been creating award-winning film work and exhibiting worldwide at venues including Oberhausen Kurzfilmtage, International Film Festival Rotterdam, Cinémathèque québécoise, The British Film Institute, the Istanbul Modern, and the Museum of the Moving Image. In addition to serving on juries including Queer Lisboa, MIX Copenhagen, and Canada Council for the Arts, he has been curating moving image works with Pleasure Dome, Inside Out LGBT Film Festival, Toronto Queer Film Festival, and the Images Festival.
This workshop is part of LIFT’s Touring Filmmaking Workshops with media arts centers throughout Ontario. The touring program is generously supported by the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF).
