LIFT announces Mexican Visiting Artist Manuela de Laborde

LIFT ANNOUNCES MEXICAN VISITING ARTIST
MANUELA DE LABORDE

Toronto, October 15, 2019—The Liaison of Independent Filmmakers of Toronto (LIFT) is pleased to announce that Manuela de Laborde has joined us from Mexico City as a visiting artist from October 1 to November 1, 2019 to work on completing Ficciones, a new film that she is making for the 66th annual International Short Film Festival Oberhausen in May. Commissioned by the festival for Mika Taanila’s Conditional Cinema project, Ficciones is in the final iteration of a three-year film cycle that reconceptualizes expanded cinema as a growing and organic process.

Over the course of the process, she has built ceramic sculptural terrariums and filmed them as they grew moss and aged over the cycle. She comes to LIFT to finish the final film version, using LIFT’s optical printer to manipulate the footage she has shot over the course of the project.

Manuela de Laborde is both a visual artist and filmmaker. She received her MFA at the California Institute of the Arts and BA at Edinburgh College of Art. Laborde’s practice, by abstracting concepts from their concrete properties, looks to create [virtual] spaces and [regenerate] the image. Inspired by simplicity of expression, economy of detail, location of exhibition, her practice is a meditation on physical presence. To the eye, her work carries aesthetic claims and pleasure; yet in its presentation is performative and in its purpose, conceptual. Her first film, As Without So Within, screened in many venues worldwide, including the Wavelengths program of the Toronto International Film Festival, and won the Best International Short Award at WNDX Film Festival and the Grand Prix at 25fps Festival in Zagreb. http://manueladelaborde.com
