Join Willie Varela, legendary experimental film and video artist, for this artist talk, co-presented by Pix Film Gallery, the aluCine Latin Film + Media Arts Festival and the Liaison of Independent Filmmakers of Toronto, and moderated by Toronto filmmaker Stephen Broomer.
 
Willie Varela’s visit to Toronto is made possible by the aluCine Latin Film + Media Arts Festival, with support from the8fest, Pleasure Dome, LIFT, and Pix Film Gallery. In the evening, following this talk, Varela will be presenting his films at aluCine’s closing gala program, Willie Varela: Hidden Presences, at CineCycle at 7PM.
 
WHO ARE YOU? WHO ARE WE? THOUGHTS ON IDENTITY, LABELS AND REINVENTION
 
In this polarizing, oversaturated media world, issues such as personal/national identity, labels used to categorize an individual so as to minimize his/her uniqueness, and the concept of reinvention as a response to capitalism, personal expectations, popular culture, political pressures, etc., have created an intense anxiety in certain cultures, which has led to indecisiveness and aparthy.
