Toronto, February 25, 2014—The Liaison of Independent Filmmakers of Toronto (LIFT) and the Goethe-Institut Toronto are pleased to announce Anja Dornieden and Juan David González Monroy (Berlin) as our 2014 Goethe-LIFT Artists-in-Residence. Working together for the last four years under the moniker OJOBOCA (Spanish for Eye and Mouth), Dornieden and González Monroy have created a body of work that straddles the line between documentary truth, experimental film and narrative fiction. As members of the microlab and artists’ collective LaborBerlin, they are at the forefront of a younger generation of filmmakers intent on working in analog film, keeping the artisanal processes of celluloid alive and reinvesting it into contemporary practice. The pair has come to LIFT to work on finalizing a new film they shot in Indonesia as well as presenting workshops and their film work to the public. They will be in Toronto until March 31, 2014.

Our goal is to investigate the manner in which different cultures construct and enact different strategies (such as myth, fantasy, utopia and nostalgia) to create idealized narratives of peoples and spaces.”

Complimenting their production interest, LIFT and the Goethe will present a series of public workshops, and screenings to connect their work with the local community. Their first event is a three-day workshop called, With Photochemical Eyes: Alternative Approaches to Documentary Filmmaking, which explores the potential of 16mm film to create works that challenge the standard practices of documentary filmmaking. The workshop will take participants through alternative processes of filmmaking and sound-collection to look at the film essay as an expansive form. The workshop runs March 5, 8 and 17. Spots are limited and pre-registration is required. The duo will also engage in an experimental Super 8mm workshop with grades 5 and 6 at a local public school.

On Tuesday, March 11 at CineCycle, Dornieden and González Monroy will present a screening of their films. The evening, entitled The Hand, the Eye and the Mouth: Films by Anja Dornieden and Juan David González Monroy will feature their 35mm film A Flea’s Skin Will Be Too Big for You, shot on location at the Chinese theme park, “The Kingdom of Dwarfs”, in addition to a brand new triple film projection performance.

On Friday, March 21, the Goethe-Institut will host an artist talk on their film Eigenheim, about dollhouses from the days of the German Democratic Republic that are now collectors’ items on eBay. Through the words of their past and new owners, Eigenheim looks at the people and memories that once dwelled in these spaces to explore the remnants of a lost world. The artists will present the short film and then discuss the project with the audience.
