LIFT ANNOUNCES SUMMER 2012 ARTIST IN RESIDENCE

Toronto, July 5, 2012—The Liaison of Independent Filmmakers of Toronto (LIFT) announces that Brazilian artist, filmmaker and independent curator Kika Nicolela has arrived in Toronto to participate in LIFT’s international artist-in-residence program. This program, aimed at international filmmakers, focuses on the production of film-based works with equipment and facilities to which the artist would not have access in their local region. Kika will be in Toronto until August 14 and her schedule will feature programs in each of LIFT’s core areas—education, exhibition and production services. During the residency she will work with LIFT to develop a new body of work using 8 and 16mm footage gathered in São Paulo. She will also be presenting workshops at both LIFT and Gallery 44 Centre for Contemporary Photography. On Thursday July 26 CineCycle will host a retrospective screening of Kika’s videos. Further events and details about the workshops and screening will be announced as the residency progresses.

Kika Nicolela is a Brazilian artist, filmmaker and independent curator. Her works include single-channel videos, installations, performances, experimental documentaries and photography. Graduated in Film and Video by the University of São Paulo, Kika Nicolela also completed film courses at UCLA University. She has participated of over 100 solo and group exhibitions in Austria, Brazil, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, UK and US. The artist was the recipient of several prominent Brazilian grants and awards, including the 2011 Funarte Contemporary Art Award, 2011 Piracicaba Art Salon Acquisition Award, 2010 Exhibition Abroad Award by the Bienal Foundation and the Ministry of Culture, 2006 Visual Arts Production Grant by the São Paulo Arts Council, 2007 Production Grant by the Recife Arts Week and the 2006 Exhibition Grant by the São Paulo Cultural Center.
 
Her videos have been screened and awarded in festivals of more than 30 countries, such as: Kunst Film Biennale, Milan International Film Festival, Uppsala International Short Film Festival, Bilbao International Film Festival, Oberhausen International Short Film Festival, Japan Media Arts Festival, Videoformes New Media & Video Art Festival and International Electronic Art Festival Videobrasil. As a curator, Kika Nicolela has developed programs for the festivals Videoformes (France), aluCine Toronto Latin Film and Media Arts Festival (Canada), AIVA Angelholm International Video Art Festival (Sweden) and for the projects Wikitopia (China), Directors Lounge (Germany) and Manipulated Image (US). She was the main curator of Tactile Image (Brazil), an exhibition featuring over 200 international artist films and videos, as well as of the festivals CineDesign (Brazil) and Experimenta! (Brazil). From 2008 to 2011 Kika Nicolela curated and coordinated the Exquisite Corpse Video Project, an ongoing collaborative series of videos that involved more than 70 artists from 25 countries. She is also a founding member of the Traffic Jam, a project that promotes the making of new video work in different urban settings through a collaborative creation process among a group of international artists. She has been an artist-in-residence at the Sumu AIR (Finland), Rondo Studio (Austria), Künstlerdorf Schöppingen Foundation (Germany), Gyeonggi Creation Center (South Korea), Casa das Caldeiras (Brazil), Objectifs (Singapore), Route Fabrik (Switzerland) and the Liaison of Independent Filmmakers of Toronto – LIFT (Canada).
