Zoetropes: Introduction to Pre-Cinema Technologies
Saturday, July 16, 2011
LIFT, 1137 Dupont Streeet
This one-day workshop focuses on the construction of zoetropes and phenakistoscopes. A zoetrope is pre-cinema technology that produces an illusion of action from a
rapid succession of static pictures. Participants learn how the motion of a zoetrope creates moving images, and draw shapes for their own zoetrope project. The course looks at phenakistoscopes, devices that use the persistence of vision principle to create an illusion of motion and work on a project. LIFT Artist in Residence brings samples of his experiments in pre-cinema technologies and leads the discussion in this fascinating topic.

The residency is generously supported by the Canada Council for the Arts.
