BAICC SCREENING AND PERFORMANCE: SPANISH FILMS MADE IN RESIDENCE AT LIFT

Toronto, September 26, 2025—The Liaison of Independent Filmmakers of Toronto (LIFT) and (S8) Mostra Internacional de Cinema Periférico present BAICC Screening and Performance: Spanish Films Made in Residence at LIFT. Join us on Friday, October 3, 2025 at 7:00pm for a screening of films made by Spanish filmmakers who were artist-in-residence at LIFT over the last eight years.

In 2017, the (S8) Mostra Internacional de Cinema Periférico in A Coruña, Spain launched the first International Artistic Residencies of Cinematographic Creation (BAICC) with the support of Acción Cultural Española (AC/E) at LIFT. It was designed as a production residency for expanded cinema work shot and performed in analog format (35mm, 16mm, 8mm or Super 8). BAICC aimed to continue a line of work and research that seeks to open new paths for emerging creators, creating an exchange with an institution of international relevance. The results of the residency are premiered each year within (S8), giving the creators the chance to present their work to the Mostra’s international public and interact with it. This is the first time in Toronto that many of these films will be seen in their finished form.

Since its start, a total of 3 men and 5 women have completed BAICC residencies. We will show six of the projects that were made at LIFT, with two artists (Álvaro Feldman and Brenda Boyer), in person to present live performances of their work. The filmmakers will be joined by Ángel Rueda, Ana Domínguez, and Nela Fraga, part of the (S8) Organizational Team, who will participate in a short Q&A after the screening.

PROGRAM:
Running Time 112 min

TORONTONTERO | Álvaro Feldman
2023, 16mm performance, 20 min
Based on several sound and film loops, “Torontontero” is a performance in which the mise-en-scène is arranged using the crossing of these orbits in loops, seeking a multiple, unique way of sharing the experience of living in the Canadian city for a period of time in the LIFT residency. The film explores techniques such as optical and contact printing, artisan film developing, and working with magnetic sound, in order to introduce variations on patterns that generate a visual and auditory rhythm.

TORTUGA [pasaje cromático #4 | Brenda Boyer
2025, 16mm performance, 20 min
Applying the principles of colour separation using RGB filters, copying and overprinting to build a film in which the Canadian natural environment vibrates through light, opening up a space of mystery within it. One of the keys to this work is that it does not need the three colours to come together in a “real colour”, but rather allows the images to stand alone with the fractured colour patterns.

Intermission

RELIEVES | Tono Mejuto
2018, 16mm shown digitally, 17 min
This project was developed within the very first call of BAICC – International Artistic Residencies for Film Creation 2017/18. Shot in 3D 16mm in Toronto, the film is a “symphony of a city” structured on three levels, composed through subtle gestures that mark a rhythm in which to sway. From the minimal gestures of people riding the subway, to the rhythmic movements within the frame on the surface of the city: smoke rising, pigeons taking flight, the passing of a passerby, and the lines marked by the city’s power lines as they look up at the sky between buildings.

Sound of Images | Laura Moreno Bueno
2022, 16mm shown digitally, 17 min
Based on the use of photosensitive microphones that convert light into sound, thus creating a soundtrack from images of a city projected on a screen. What do Toronto’s landscapes sound like, what colors do its spaces evoke, what is its rhythm and tone? The resulting piece is a kind of diary of Moreno’s stay in Toronto, which the director constructed around the colors and shapes encountered on her walks through the city. It is a symphony of a city that truly sings, a direct translation of its projected images.

LATITUDE MESH | Agnès Hayden
2024, 16mm shown digitally, 18 min
“Latitude Mesh” is a film that puts different photosensitive emulsions into dialogue: Kodak Tri-X, a Kodak 3378 high contrast film and Hayden’s own emulsion, created artisanally. The latter provides the main thrust of the work: the research into the work’s characteristics and possibilities. The film is structured using three concepts: the descent in photographic latitude from the most light-sensitive emulsion to the least; the descent in Toronto’s geographical latitude, filming from north to south according to the emulsion; and a physical descent by the camera, from low-angle images focusing on the heights, passing through the city and the land, then ending at Lake Ontario.

PROPIEDADES DE UNA ESFERA PARALELA | Valentina Alvarado
2020, double 16mm performance shown digitally, 20 min
“Gouache, mirrors, and crystals are some of the tools I use for approaching a landscape that is unknown to me. In ‘Propiedades de una esfera paralela,’ I lay out different visual exercises that I repeated during my residency in Canada. Altering the landscape becomes a daily game in the distance.”—Valentina Alvarado

BIOGRAPHIES:

During his studies, Álvaro Feldman – 2022 Fall BAICC Resident (Madrid, 1996) began to explore the possibilities of analog film in relation to the artisanal aspect of developing, editing and printing. Feldman has carried out projects such as the Fuera de Campo Laboratory in Seville. He is a professor at LAV (Laboratorio Audiovisual de Creación y Práctica Contemporánea), in Madrid, and currently coordinates Acme Obscura, the first laboratory in Madrid dedicated to the work and processes of photochemical film. Upon his return from Toronto, with the new knowledge acquired at LIFT, Álvaro founded the ACME Obscura photochemical photography and film laboratory in Madrid, a center that combines collective work in analog formats and the programming of local and international artists, such as Richard Tuohy and Dianna Barrie, Azucena Losana and Gaëlle Rouard. https://vimeo.com/user9374440

Brenda Boyer – 2024 BAICC Resident (Alicante, 1984) is an interdisciplinary artist. Currently, she is working on several projects related to the body, image, and the materiality of the photochemical support, while investigating the ethical and aesthetic potential of movement with choreographer Poliana Lima. Her focus lies in the articulation of light and movement in time and space, as well as the dynamic relationship between light and its absence as a form of aesthetic experimentation and exploration of different states of consciousness, with a deep connection with nature. https://www.instagram.com/brenda_boyer_

Tono Mejuto – 2018 BAICC Resident (A Coruña, 1983) is a filmmaker, photographer and architect. In 2017, he directed his first piece in 16mm, “QVIASMA” (2017) programmed in festivals such as Play-doc, (S8) Mostra de Cinema Periférico de A Coruña, Filmadrid and Curtocircuito (Spain), FIVC (Chile), Dança en Foco de Sao Paulo (Brazil), at Teatro-Circo de Braga (Portugal) and Ceprodac (Mexico). After “Relieves,” he directs “Unidade Veciñal” (2019), shot in 16mm: the film consecutively runs through the spaces and halls of a group of social housing in a neighborhood of A Coruña. He also carries out the photographic exhibition project “Memorias do Ceo” (2023). He is a founding member of Festival FFOCO, of photography and collaborates regularly in the festival (S8). https://www.instagram.com/tono_mejuto

Laura Moreno Bueno – 2022 Winter BAICC Resident (Madrid, 1995) created “While the Vines Weep” and “Níobe,” where she sought to represent tears through movement, and carried out the installation “III.” Her films have been screened at festivals such as Ann Arbor Film Festival, Images Festival (Canadá), FICUNAM (México), Cámara Lúcida (Ecuador), CROSSROADS (USA), FestiFreak (Argentina), Anthology Film Archives (USA), (S8) Mostra de Cinema Periférico (A Coruña-España), L’Alternativa (Barcelona-España) and Filmadrid (Madrid-España), among others. https://lauramorenobueno.com

Agnès Hayden – 2023 BAICC Resident (Spain, 2000) is a multidisciplinary artist with a background in Cinematography and a 2023 graduate of the Master LAV (Audiovisual Laboratory for Contemporary Creation and Practice). Her work often embraces analog mediums, focusing on 16mm and Super 8mm film. At the core of Agnès’ artistic practice lies an exploration and inclination towards technology and the dialogue that emerges through her work with machines. She perceives machines as extensions of the human body and externalizations of our inherently biological thinking. Her work delves into the boundaries between the machine and the self in a deeply technologized society. Currently, Agnès is studying coding and programming to deepen her understanding of these concepts. Her visual work is often connected to the soundscapes it evokes, with Agnès composing the sound for most of her pieces. Her films and performances have been featured internationally at events such as Beijing International Short Film Festival (China), the8fest (Canada), Peripheries Experimental Film & Video Fest (Chicago), Elevation Film Festival (United Kingdom), Intermediaciones (Colombia), Light Matter Film Festival (Argentina), (S8) Mostra de Cinema Periférico (A Coruña), Encuadres LAV, Círculo de Bellas Artes and Academia de Cine Español (Madrid), among others. https://www.instagram.com/agnesh4yden

Valentina Alvarado Matos – 2020 BAICC Resident (1986, Maracaibo) is an artist who focuses on collage, seen as a vessel that contains many forms, such as paper, film, ceramics and a range of media.
