Introduction to 16mm Bolex Repair

Repairing a Bolex 16mm camera can be a complex task, especially given their age and the precision required for their operation. Join instructor Timothy J. (TJ) Ediger to observe the full disassembly of a 16mm Reflex Bolex and gain a comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms of analog mechanical cameras. Participate in a discussion on how to identify common problems including mechanical jams, film transport issues or problems with the viewfinder, and learn how to perform quick field fixes.

Following the disassembly and discussion, participants will dive into maintenance of the various components of their own Bolex cameras. Start by looking for obvious signs of damage, wear, dust, dirt or debris buildup, and practice basic cleaning and surface maintenance to help keep your camera performing consistently during and after production. Finally, gain tips and tricks on what to look for when purchasing a Bolex and accessories, and how to ensure proper storage in a dry, dust-free environment to prevent damage.

Repairing a Bolex camera requires patience and precision, but with careful attention to detail, filmmakers can keep their cameras in working order. Harness this opportunity to learn through this step by step guide to help ensure the longevity and proper function of your Bolex camera.

Participants are required to attend the workshop with their own Bolex cameras for the practical components of this workshop.
