Screenwriters Circle – January 15

The LIFT Screenwriters Circle meets online on the third Wednesday of each month to facilitate skill sharing, supportive critique and moving member scripts from the page to the screen. You must be a current LIFT member to attend this group.

No experience is necessary, just a passion for words and images and a dream to one day see them on screen. Through monthly meetings members create a welcoming and comfortable environment where individuals can explore their creativity, share knowledge and encourage each other’s development as writers and artists.

The objectives are:
– To create a friendly and open critique group devoted to helping its Members.
– To learn the craft of screenwriting.
– To refine and polish members writing skills through group interaction and criticism.
– To create a safe and respectful meeting place for writers to exchange ideas and find inspiration.

While no experience is needed we ask that you are:
– A LIFT member in good standing.
– Actively writing and/or seeking the sale/production of material.
– Submitting your own original material.
– Determined to improve your writing skills.
– Able to accept criticism of your work.
– Able to give honest and constructive criticism of others’ work.
– Able to consistently attend the meetings.
– Willing to participate fully in the group’s activities.

HISTORICAL TIMELINE

The LIFT Screenwriter’s Group was approved in November 2004 after a proposal from Aron Dunn during the time of various LIFT past committees.

Vincent Shiao
Moderator, September 2011 to September 2012
Vince Shiao is the creator of the television series Departure, starring Archie Panjabi and Christopher Plummer. He has written for shows that have streamed and/or aired on Netflix, CBS, Syfy Channel, Global TV, and others. Prior to becoming a TV writer, Vince worked as a Chartered Accountant.

Chris Roberts
Moderator, November 2008 to September 2011
Chris Roberts is a television writer based in Toronto. Chris has worked on every kind of TV, including sci-fi Orphan Black (Space/BBCA), historical drama Frontier (Discovery Canada/Netflix), thrillers Ten Days in the Valley (ABC) and Mary Kills People (Showcase), fantasy Trickster (CBC) and procedurals Coroner (CBC) and Pretty Hard Cases (NBC). Chris has a lifelong passion for science fiction and fantasy, and the golden age of television has provided a perfect venue for his love of story. Chris was born in Halifax but raised on the prairies in Winnipeg. After trying to take up the family business in medicine, he decided it was safer for everyone if he pursued his love of writing instead. He came to Toronto to study screenwriting at York University, earning an MFA in Screenwriting and making him laughably overqualified. Chris is passionate about helping new writers learn their craft and served as the moderator of the LIFT Screenwriter’s Circle and currently mentors diverse writers with the Writers Guild of Canada (WGC.) He has developed numerous television projects with The CW, Bell Media, Corus Entertainment, and Shaw Communications and is working on a number of exciting projects with Canadian and international producers.

Aron Dunn
Moderator, January 2005 to August 2008
An industry vet with two decades of experience, Aron leads his merry band of rebels on their campaign of creativity at Treason Media. When he’s not crafting a killer pitch, or delivering his latest script, he is staying in touch with his “inner kid” by reading the latest comic books or playing the hottest video games. Over the course of his career, Aron has worked with Cartoon Network, CTC, Disney XD, Nickelodeon, Teletoon, YTV, Treehouse, KiKA, and CBC Kids. He has also contributed scripts to numerous animated comedy series including Taffy, Lex & Plu: Space Taxi Drivers, Super Wings, Cupcake and Dinosaur: General Services, Chuck Chicken, Rusty Rivets, Pocoyo, Camp Lakebottom, Justin Time, Trucktown and The Insectibles. Prior to founding Treason Media, Aron held senior development roles with some of Canada’s most prolific and acclaimed producers, including Breakthrough Entertainment and Portfolio Entertainment.
