Lost Secrets of the Royal – In Production for November 2011

Beginning in 2007 LIFT and the Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival began discussions towards realizing a commissioning project producing new work from LIFT’s large collection of 35mm Hong Kong films from the 1970s and 80s. In 2009 festival Artistic Director Heather Keung and LIFT Executive Director Ben Donoghue developed a commissioning project for gallery based installation works using the films.

Four contemporary Asian-Canadian artists were selected for this project: soJin Chun, Cindy Mochizuki, Louise Noguchi and Daïchi Saïto, based on their proposals for the creation of media art instalations using this archive as source. The project received support from the Canada Council for the Arts in the spring of 2010 and production began.

The artists have been working with LIFT to complete their projects for premeire presentations in November 2011 in conjunction with Reel Asian. Cindy Mochizuki and Daïchi Saïto will be presenting their new works at the Blackwood Gallery with soJin Chun and Louise Noguchi presenting at A Space Gallery. A catalogue including newly commissioned critical essays will be published to coincide with the exhibitions.

LIFT and Reel Asian would like to thanks the artists, the Canada Council for the Arts, the Blackwood Gallery and A Space Gallery for making this project possible.
