Young Creators Co-Lab: Expanded Cinema
Some films aren’t meant to be shown in the theatre. Join moving-image artists (and current LIFT Members) Francisca Duran and Derek Jenkins to learn more about a filmmaking practice that predates cinema itself! From galleries to performances and tabletop exhibitions, expanded cinema explores film’s possibilities outside of traditional spaces with a hands-on approach that often gives its audience insight into the process of creation and uses non-traditional materials. Through a panel discussion and drop-in workshop on film scratching, looping, and phytograms, this session will allow creatives to explore the alternative cinemaspace, learn about analog film preservation, and dissolve the boundaries of what you thought was possible with (or without) a film camera.

Join us afterward from 1pm-3pm for a drop-in workshop on film scratching, looping, and phytograms where participants are encouraged to take a hands-on approach to expanded cinema and explore analog film and projection at their own pace and create their own film loops! This workshop is free and open to everyone.

The Young Creators Co-Lab is a gathering space for young and emerging artists in Toronto to connect with industry professionals and discover new entry points into the world of film. Develop your craft, meet like-minded peers, and learn how to build a career in the media arts. The Co-Lab offers four sessions of connective and engaging programming for filmmakers, performers, and creatives, April 12–13 at TIFF Lightbox.
