The
award goes to Alejandro
Valbuena for his film Burnt.
A
film based on real life experiences, Burnt is a monochromatic recount of
childhood memories presented through a lover’s voice.
The
jury was captured by this filmmaker’s use of modern dance to tell a moving tale
of an adolescent’s self-acceptance in a family unable to accept who he is. This
is self-assured and poignant piece speaks to us in an age when we’re told “It’s
gets better.”—jury citation
