The Indigenous Routes Collective is seeking applicants for an eight-week new media project taking place in Toronto this summer. Six Indigenous youth will be selected for an intensive training and production program towards the creation of an online interactive documentary.
Participants will work with project mentors Archer Pechawis and the Aboriginal Territories in Cyberspace (AbTeC) collective, as well as industry professionals who will provide training in a wide range of media production skills including web design, photography, video, audio, video games and interactive art. Participants will work on individual and group projects to form a collective online project. Indigenous routes will partner with the imagineNATIVE Film + Media Arts Festival to showcase the completed project in the new media programming section at the festival in October 2012.
Eligibility Requirements:
– To be eligible, an Indigenous person between the ages of 16–25 (i.e. self-identified as Indigenous, Aboriginal or First Peoples and their descendents)*
– Have a basic understanding and passion to learn media arts
– Must be able to commit to all Tuesdays–Fridays, 11am–4pm from June 12th–August 3rd, 2012

About Indigenous Routes:
The Indigenous Routes Collective was founded in 2011 by Amanda Strong, Archer Pechawis and Ben Donoghue to carry out community collaborative projects producing interactive documentaries, and to ultimately provide new media opportunities for Indigenous youth. Indigenous Routes is a collaboration between professional media artists and Indigenous youth towards the production of interactive media exploring personal narratives of native space.
The Indigenous Routes Project is supported by the Ontario Arts Council, Association for Native Development in the Performing and Visual Arts (ANDPVA) and the Liaison of Independent Filmmakers of Toronto (LIFT).
*Indigenous communities, First Peoples, and Aboriginal nations are those that are self-identified as having a historical continuity with societies that developed on recognized territories before colonization or transformation of that region into a nation-state and may consider themselves distinct (with often unique cultural, linguistic, traditional, social and other characteristics) from other sectors of the societies or nation-states now prevailing on those territories.
