LIFT announces the 2020 BAICC Resident – Valentina Alvarado Matos
LIFT ANNOUNCES 2020 BAICC RESIDENT VALENTINA ALVARADO MATOS
Toronto, February 12, 2020—The Liaison of Independent Filmmakers of Toronto (LIFT) is pleased to welcome Venezuelan filmmaker Valentina Alvarado Matos as the current resident in the third edition of the BAICC Residencias Artísticas Internacionales de Creacion Cinematográfica, a collaboration between the (S8) Mostra Internacional de Cinema Periférico, Acción Cultural Española (AC/E) and LIFT. The residency supports the making of a new analogue film-based work by creators born or living in Spain. The work made in the residency will premiere at the next iteration of the S8 Film Festival, held during the first week of June 2020 in A Coruña, Spain. Alvarado Matos will be in Toronto until the end of February to work on her film Properties of a Parallel Sphere. The piece consists of a 16mm film combining the winter environment of Toronto with contrasting landscapes drawn from postcards from her home country. These collaged postcards will be placed in front of the lens during the shooting process, tropicalizing the Canadian winter environment. The piece plays with the idea of constructing other new possible landscapes from a climatic, geographical, and emotional distance.
Through a multidisciplinary artistic practice, Valentina Alvarado Matos (Maracaibo, 1986) explores the hybridization of the various plastic languages that she uses—collage, ceramics, photography and analog film—to elaborate discourses linked to memory and identity displayed in unfinished geographies. Her work establishes a constant dialogue between the digital and analog were the poetic and the political form an important part of her artistic proposal. She is currently a resident of La Escocesa. https://www.valentinalvaradomatos.com
