THE LIAISON OF INDEPENDENT FILMMAKERS OF TORONTO (LIFT)
ANNOUNCES THE 2024 BAICC RESIDENT
BRENDA BOYER
Toronto, October 9, 2024—The Liaison of Independent Filmmakers of Toronto (LIFT) is pleased to welcome Spanish filmmaker Brenda Boyer as the current resident in the eighth edition of the BAICC Residencias Artísticas Internacionales de Creacion Cinematográfica, a collaboration between the (S8) Mostra Internacional de Cinema Periférico, Acción Cultural Española (AC/E) and LIFT. The residency supports the making of a new analogue film-based work by creators born or living in Spain. The work made in the residency will premiere at the next iteration of the S8 Film Festival, held in June 2025 in A Coruña, Spain.
Arriving in mid-September, Boyer is in town until mid-October to work on her project “turtle [chromatic passage #4].” This project takes advantage of time, sunlight and its translation, the movement of shadows caused by the wind and other elements to color the landscape from the superimposition of layers and RGB filters. Applying the principles of chromatic separation, three different moments of the same plane are superimposed, generating an offset in the light-shadow relationship and thus the appearance of primary and secondary colors. Boyer will be shooting in the urban parks of Toronto to build a film in which the natural environment vibrates through the light, opening a space of mystery within.
Boyer will present a screening next week on Wednesday, October 16, 2024 at 7:00pm in the LIFT Main Classroom, 1137 Dupont Street. The screening will feature earlier films in the chromatic series as well as a collection of films made last year at LAV (Laboratorio AudioVisual de Creación y Prácticas Contemporáneas), an experimental educational space around avant-garde cinema in Madrid.
Brenda Boyer (Alicante, 1984) is an interdisciplinary artist. Currently, she is working on several projects related to the body, image, and the materiality of the photochemical support, while investigating the ethical and aesthetic potential of movement with choreographer Poliana Lima. Her focus lies in the articulation of light and movement in time and space, as well as the dynamic relationship between light and its absence as a form of aesthetic experimentation and exploration of different states of consciousness, with a deep connection with nature. https://www.instagram.com/brenda_boyer_
