Distribution Strategies for Independent Films

This workshop is an overview on the role of the distributor in the life cycle of your film. Students will learn the basics of how a film is released into theaters, on broadcast networks and on VOD platforms, and about additional opportunities for exploitation like airline and educational sales. We’ll cover ways to connect with distributors and what to look for in a partner, as well as when to bring a distributor on board your film. Topics will include working with Telefilm, the role of a sales agent vs. a distributor, what deliverables you’ll need, PR and marketing strategies and festival planning. We’ll review the basics of contracting, and discuss possible pathways for short films.
