Introduction to Independent Filmmaking
This lecture-based course gives participants an overview of all the stages involved in independent filmmaking and a must for beginning directors and producers. Learn about the writing process, planning your workflow, prepping for your shoot, crewing up, the fundamentals of production, basic cinematography, the importance of sound, getting all your shots, how to approach editing and the many options for finishing and exhibiting your film. This workshop is a general overview for new filmmakers and a great starting point for your filmmaking education.
Since completing a Masters of Fine Arts at York University in Film Production, Coral Aiken has been directing and producing independent film in Toronto. She produced the short film Big Muddy, which competed in the Cinefondation program, Festival de Cannes 2011. Other screenings of Aiken’s short films include European Media Art Festival, Internationale Kurzfilmtage Oberhausen, International Films Festival Rotterdam, and New York Queer Experimental Film Festival. Projects in development include feature films with directors Jefferson Moneo, Bob Wiseman and Danielle Morgan. Aiken is Head of Development at Scythia Films Inc. where she works financing feature films with producer Daniel Bekerman. Scythia Films recent projects include You Are Here directed by Daniel Cockburn (Winner Toronto Critic’s Jay Scott Prize), and The Pin, a Yiddish-language WWII film by Naomi Jaye, in post-production.
