Introduction to Independent Filmmaking
This lecture-based course gives participants an overview of all the stages involved in independent filmmaking and a must for beginning directors and producers. Learn about the writing process, planning your workflow, prepping for your shoot, crewing up, the fundamentals of production, basic cinematography, the importance of sound, getting all your shots, how to approach editing and the many options for finishing and exhibiting your film. This workshop is a general overview for new filmmakers and a great starting point for your filmmaking education.
Coral Aiken is a director and producer from Winnipeg, Canada. After a career in dance, performing across Canada and mounting multichannelworks for stage, Aiken began choreographing work for the screen and then directing her own work. In her films, Aiken explores themes of nostalgia and memory, with surreal elements rooting her work in the tradition of Magical Realism. Since completing a Masters of Fine Arts at York University in Film Production, Aiken has been producing independent film. Her co-production Big Muddy was selected to screen in the Cinéfondation program at the Festival de Cannes 2011. Other screenings include European Media Art Festival, Internationale Kurzfilmtage Oberhausen, and New York Queer Experimental Film Festival. She recently joined Scythia Films Inc. as Head of Development. She currently works as the Education Coordinator at LIFT. www.coralaiken.com
