The cinematographer is responsible for all the visual elements of a film. He or she makes every creative choice related to composition, lighting, and camera motion—anything that audiences can see in a given shot. Whether you are interested in directing or shooting, this lecture-based class will give you a solid understanding of the elements of cinematography. Topics include: film and video formats, focus and depth of field, filters, natural and practical lighting, and shooting for editing.

The Camera Theory workshop is strongly recommended as a prerequisite to this class. Cinematography Fundamentals is a prerequisite to Intermediate Cinematography.

Instructor:

From a very young age, James Klopko expressed great interest in video cameras and still photography. To further this interest, he spent four years at Ryerson University's School of Image Arts studying cinematography under Torben Johnke ASC. With numerous student films under his belt, upon graduating James was accepted to the Budapest Cinematography Masterclass of 2007, where he was instructed by the cinematography masters Vilmos Zsigmond ASC (Close Encounter of the Third Kind, The Deer Hunter, The Black Dahlia) and Elemer Ragalyi HSC (Jakob The Liar, An American Rhapsody, Never Talk to Strangers). In 2006, James was the winner of the Technicolor Award in Cinematography.
