16mm Filmmaking Intensive
Make a 16mm film in this filmmaking intensive. Learn to shoot with the Bolex camera, edit on the flatbed and experiment with optical printing with the JK. This workshop includes film, equipment and facilities rental time (see details below).
Learn to operate LIFT’s most versatile film camera and gain a solid foundation in 16mm filmmaking.
Edit your film by hand and learn how to use a flatbed editor.
Optical Printing with the JK Workshop
Learn the basics of Optical Printing, including step printing, skip printing, superimposition, and bipacking film on LIFT’s JK optical printer.
The 16mm Filmmaking Intensive concludes with a screening at the end of the workshop season. All participants, members and friends are welcome to attend.
16mm Filmmaking Intensive includes:
- Bolex 16mm Camera Workshop
- Editing on Film Workshop
- Optical Printing with the JK Workshop
- Camera: Bolex 16mm camera (one weekend rental or one weekday rental)
- Film: Kodak Tri-X reversal black and white 16mm film stock (200ft)
- Processing and printing of film at Niagara Custom Lab
- Editing: Four (4) hours of flatbed editing time (see details)
- JK Optical Printer: Four (4) hours of rental time (see details)
LIFT’s Camera Theory workshop is strongly recommended as a prerequisite for the 16mm Filmmaking Intensive. All equipment and facilities credits must be used by Friday April 27, 2012. Non-members must book equipment and facilities time during LIFT office hours (Monday-Friday, 10am-6pm).
Bolex 16mm Camera Workshop
Marcos Arriaga was born in Lima, Peru. He graduated from San Martin de Porres University in Lima with a Bachelor’s Degree in Communications in 1985. Marcos worked as a Journalist and Photographer for the daily newspaper Marka, and the weekly magazine Amauta. He immigrated to Canada in 1987 and graduated from the Sheridan College Media Arts Film Program in 1995. He earned a Master of Fine Arts in Film Production at York University in 2003. Marcos has completed seven short films and a medium long documentary, which have been shown widely in Canada and internationally. www.marcosarriaga.com
Editing on Film Workshop
Chris Kennedy is an independent filmmaker, programmer and writer currently living in Toronto. He has made over a dozen short experimental films, many of which were edited on film. He holds an MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute.
Optical Printing with the JK
Alexi Manis has been a loyal LIFT member for almost a decade and has made several short films, most of which were shot, edited and finished on 16mm. She spends her days trying to convince modern digital teenagers of the magic and wonder of celluloid and her evenings with friends, family, Ivan the Terrible, Man Ray, Pierrot le Fou and other classics of world cinema, and sometimes plays around with local bluegrass band The Spi She’s a big fan of Bonnie “Prince” Billy and the Early Monthly Segments film social at the Gladstone Hotel.
