The Liaison of Independent Filmmakers of Toronto (LIFT) is an artist-run cultural and educational media arts organization dedicated to celebrating excellence in the moving image. LIFT exists to provide support and encouragement for independent filmmakers and artists through affordable access to production, post-production and exhibition equipment; professional and creative development; workshops and courses; commissioning and exhibitions; artist-residencies; and a variety of other services.
The LIFT internship program provides opportunities for students, recent graduates and emerging artists/administrators to work within a vibrant and community engaged media arts environment.
Schedule:
Interns work two (2) days per week (Monday - Friday), 10am - 6pm, for a 8-12 week Internship cycle in a specific department.
Benefits:
During their tenure, Interns receive access to LIFT workshops, an equipment rental credit, along with a small transportation and lunch stipend. After completing a full internship cycle the intern will receive a Full membership with LIFT for one-year.
Internship Positions:
Technical Department:
LIFT’s technical department provides access to affordable high quality equipment for all areas of media production, post and exhibition. This busy work environment allows interns to develop a wide range of skills that can be applied across the sector.
Areas the technical department works on include: film and digital production equipment; editing/graphics software and hardware; working with new media and other emerging technologies; flatbed editing suites; film and digital animation; location and post audio, lightning and grip; cinema and gallery presentation; and general maintenance and troubleshooting of LIFT’s technical infrastructure.
The technical internship is a good step towards a job in production or post-production.
Education and Outreach:
LIFT’s education and community outreach programs provide over 150 professional development workshops and courses a year along with dozens of training and production partnerships with diverse non-profit groups from across Toronto and beyond.
Interns working with LIFT’s educational programs primarily focus on outreach to community groups to develop curriculum and production plans suited to their specific needs. Working with LIFT’s Education Coordinator these positions involve engaging all areas of Toronto to further access to media production and dissemination for all communities. Some experience working with film and/or video production equipment and digital editing platforms is strongly recommended.
The education and outreach internship is an opportunity especially suited to those with an interest in community arts and arts education.
Development and Communications:
As a multi-faceted non-profit arts organization LIFT relies on a wide range of funding sources and communications technologies to make our work happen and connect with the community at large. Development and Communications internships at LIFT cover a broad and dynamic area where interns’ individual skills can be applied and cultivated.
Interns in this department work on some or all of the following: project documentation; print design; web maintenance and development projects; fundraising events; foundation research; and other activities on a project basis.
Internships in development and communications are ideal for those pursuing careers in design (print and web), arts administration and non-profit communications and development.
